The best football season in Flint Hamady history keeps getting better.

But beating Byron for the second time this year wasn't as easy as the first.

Hamady kept the only unbeaten season in school history alive for at least one more week by beating visiting Byron 27-21 in the opening round of the Division 6 high school playoffs.

The teams also met in the season opener, when Hamady posted a 50-28 victory during the Vehicle City Gridiron Classic at Atwood Stadium.

Hamady never trailed in the rematch after Tre Davis returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes after the opening kickoff to make it 7-0.

The score stayed that way until Byron's Jerry Hall tied it on a 6-yard run with 2:15 left in the third quarter. But Hamady took control by scoring three of the next four touchdowns to take a 27-14 lead with 6:07 to play.

The Hawks' other TDs came on a 6-yard run by Terrell Weston, an 18-yard quarterback keeper by Kori Moore and a 67-yard kickoff return by DeShawn Gibson.

Moore rushed nine times for 111 yards while completing 6 of 14 passes for 87 yards. DeShawn Gibson also had an interception for Hamady and A'Marion Gibson led the Hawks with 14 tackles.

Byron's other TDs came on a 1-yard run by Kyle Hulett and a 24-yard pass from Hulett to Josh Green.

Green caught four passes for 82 yards and had two interceptions. Jack Selon led the ground game with 104 yards on 20 carries, Hall rushed 14 times for 68 yards while making 10 tackles on defense and Hulett completed 7 of 18 passes for 121 yards.

Hamady (10-0) will meet Ecorse (8-2) in the second round.

Byron ended the season with a 5-5 record.
