Students enrolled in Hamady High School’s Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) class became “Doctors for a Day” in March. College students from Michigan State University’s Leadership in Medicine program visited Hamady and spoke about requirements for medical school, the life of a medical student, and current job opportunities in the medical field. Hamady students were also provided with hands-on experience in using medical instruments such as the blood pressure cuff and the stethoscope.

The event was organized by Dr. Celestin, Interim Director of Leadership in Medicine and Mrs. Kost, JMG Specialist at Hamady High School. The MSU medical students were Jessica Montgomery, Will McLure, Margaret Nemetz, and Amina Ramadan who are all enrolled in the Leadership in Medicine program.

The JMG program helps area young people, including those who are at risk of dropping out of high school or who have already dropped out, graduate and make successful transitions to post-secondary education or meaningful employment.

The Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved program in Flint was designed in 2004 by the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University to provide medical students with the opportunity to work with and learn from underserved and vulnerable populations. In addition to traditional clinical medical education, LMU focuses on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address the varied medical needs of urban, rural, and international underserved populations.

Westwood Heights Schools superintendent Peter Toal stated: "We appreciate the role that Ms. Kost has assumed for our students. She is on loan from Mott Community College and is helping us to grow that relationship. This program is just another opportunity for our students to gain exposure to possible career fields."
